9 Unique Ways to Experience Pennsylvania Ski Areas this Winter

Embrace the winter season and enjoy some quality time outdoors by planning a snow day at one of Pennsylvania’s 22 ski area resorts. And, for those non-skiers in the group, fear not! There's plenty of fun to be had slopeside — skis optional. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

1. SNOW TUBING

Reconnect with your inner child and enjoy the simple thrill of speeding down a hill on an inflatable rubber tube. This is the perfect outing for everyone. Best of all, you don’t have to trek back up the mountain between rides, since most resorts offer a ski lift.

2. NIGHT-TIME SKIING

Count the stars and make a wish as you carve your way down the slopes at night: many PA resorts are open for night-time skiing from 5 p.m. – 10 p.m. You’ll save some money, too, as it’s usually one of the most affordable times to ski!

3. SNOWSHOEING

Explore the scenic, snowy landscape on snowshoes. With trails scattered across the state, offering both beginner to pro options, you’ll be sure to get your heart pumping.

4. COASTER

Experience the thrill of the mountains by coaster. The Appalachian Express Mountain Coaster at Camelback cruises through the trees and down the steep slopes of Camelback Mountain for an exhilarating ride.

5. DOGSLEDDING

Bundle up in your winter warmest and head to Nemacolin for an experience of a lifetime. Tour the picturesque countryside by sled — dogsled to be precise. Let the talented team of Huskies take you over the snow and through the woods at 20 mph to grandmother’s house and beyond.

6. SPA LIFE

Pamper yourself with a spa experience. Whether you need to relieve sore muscles from a strenuous day on the slopes or simply want to rejuvenate your mind, body, and spirit, many PA ski resorts like the Trillium at Seven Springs offer an array of spa services to help you get re-energized.

7. LEARN TO SKI

Want to stay in shape this winter and learn a new winter sport? Learn to ski and snowboard. The best way for newcomers to learn is by taking lessons from a professional instructor. January is the perfect month to get outdoors and start working on those healthy New Year’s resolutions. And, to make it easy, many of the resorts offer special beginner packages, which include lift ticket, rentals and a lesson.

8. ENJOY THE VIEWS

Enjoy your favorite cocktail at the highest vertical in PA. Blue Mountain Resort’s Slopeside Bar and Grill features breathtaking views of the Poconos and a robust menu designed for every member of the family.

9. ICE SKATING

Spend the day gliding. Invite your friends to lace up their skates and enjoy the day on the brand new ice skating pond at Liberty Mountain. It’s located in the beautifully landscaped Alpine courtyard, the ideal setting for a refreshing day on the rink.
